15 Biggest Mistakes in Web Design Roundup

September 6th, 2008 · blogging tips & blog updates · 2 Comments

This week, I reread the biggest mistakes in web design from 1995-2015 at webpagesthatsuck.com. I got a big kick out of the site when I first discovered it and have continued to enjoy its “daily suckers” (and pray I never end up on it).

Besides filling our base desire for schaudenfreude, the list also has some handy tips that everyone from a professional designer to an amateur blogger might forget. So check it out.

From my blog on blogging (which I revamped last week), there are two new posts.

First, a coder or designer’sbest programming reference manual is…a search engine. My thoughts on why.

Second, I recently ran across a vastly improved, perhaps best related posts plugin. Unlike the old one I had been using (and had recommended), it doesn’t have a frequent set-up error which requires going into mySQL. And it allows you to do control everything from categories to appearance to similarity. I’m very pleased with it. I’ve also updated the Wordpress plugin starter pack to replace the old related posts plugin.

I went to webpagesthatsuck. At the end of the first problem, the blogger included a YouTube example. My computer is slow. After 5 minutes of loading, I decided to stop the YouTube and go on to the next point. But there was no way to stop the video or skip over it while it was still loading. I couldn’t even close the tab containing webpagesthatsuck. Finally I closed my browser.

I think it sucks to put a video in a blog with no way to shut it off.
