The Saga of the Missing W-2

March 24th, 2008 · personal finance & money management · 12 Comments

Well wouldn’t you know it that one of my W-2s has gone AWOL. The others are still intact and all neatly stored together.

taxcut.jpgMicah and I tore the apartment apart last night in hopes of finding it, but alas no luck. I also went on numerous small search missions all last week. It feels like every piece of paper has been double-checked to make sure it’s not a W-2 in disguise.

As I remember it…it was mailed to my parents’ house, my mother brought it down with other mail, I left it with the other mail for about a week, I put it on the “banking” pile where we put checks to be cashed and where I was keeping the other W-2s. Only when I went to get them, it wasn’t there.

We shall continue the search (and one nice thing about tax software is being able to save what you’ve got so far!) but I put in a call to the HR department at my old job to see about getting another one. Apparently they have to send you a form and you have to fax it back.

That’ll be a headache, but hopefully it’ll all still get here in time for taxes. I’ll just be cutting it closer than I’d like, I hoped to finish them this week (by finish, I mean sit my butt down and bite the bullet).

And if I’m lucky, our further searches will reveal the missing W-2. I can’t imagine where…but surely it didn’t leave the apartment. Plus any thief would surely have taken the checks or more W-2s. Unless I’m just hallucinating that my mom brought it in the first place.

So, if W-2 goes missing:

Step 1 should probably be to call HR. There’s no harm in having an extra set of W-2s. If you’re still working there or still live in the area, you may be able to get the form filled out in the same day just by dropping by.

Step 2: look look look. Make it a search party. If you’re lucky, you won’t need the 2nd W-2.

If you get the employer id# and are filing electronically you can hae Turbo Tax fill out the W2 info for you. You should still get the W2 replaced but that way you can file.

I recently misplaced something and was able to use the services of St. Anthony. Try it. It should work for you too. I’m justa saying!

One more thing. It only took about 3 minutes to find it.

Wow! That must be frustrating! I hope you can get a new one on time.

I’m jealous of your HR. You’re lucky to get a new copy of your W-2. I never received my first copy from my employer due to their miss typing of my address and had to promise my first born child just to receive a “duplicate” copy.

FYI, some companies are chargine a small fee for reprinting W-2 forms. Check with your HR. They usually take it out of your paycheck because it’s a way to maximize the bottom line with less expenses.

I think I put your W-2 form into the bag we brought down, but we’ve been searching here, too.
