Mrs. Micah: Finance for a Freelance Life

Thanks, Nina, I Now Have No Excuse Not to Do My Taxes

March 15th, 2008 · 7 Comments

Today I got my copy of H&R Block’s Tax Cut software in the mail. You’ve probably seen numerous giveaways around the blogosphere. I won mine from Queercents, where I used my UserTesting brain to come up with an idea for blog improvement.

It’s funny, I hope that this will be my most stressful year for taxes. Why? Because that would imply that from now on it’ll be less stressful.

In the past I enjoyed doing my taxes and even did them by hand. This year, I’ve been feeling a lot of tax pressure. I worked at college, then I worked at the library last summer before I got married. I then worked at my temp job from August until November. I started freelancing in the fall and then got the hospital job in November. I’m just grateful that I didn’t start at the library until January—one less place to worry about.

I also lived in 3 states. And I worked in 4 (if you count DC). But it would have been 5 if my job temp job hadn’t been entirely temporary and the agency located in a state I already work in. If I’d left after they hired me, I would have worked in 5 states.

Micah’s pretty easy, while he was living in DC he kept an official MD residence with his parents. And he only worked at the university. So he’s always been an MD resident and only has one income to report. Thank God for small favors.

Sunday assignment for myself: Round up all my relevant forms and put them in a special folder.

Fortunately, I stash all the important mail in a particular spot, and I know I put them there too. I hope that with the software it’ll be easier, since I can save my work and come back to it.

Thanks again, Nina.

Hi, I miss you. Did you get my e-mail?

Ahh taxes…grumble grumble. We’ve done ours in the past (me with the help of my dad), but this year we are going to a tax guy because we’ve lived in 2 states, held 4 jobs, got married and are now grad students. I’m hoping a professional guy can find some sort of sweet tax break for us since we pay Nathan’s tuition out of pocket using most of my graduate stipend. In the future, however, I definitely plan to do them myself. You’re right - it is satisfying, and almost a tiny bit fun. :-) Hope you are well!

Ah, yes, I remember those first few tax seasons of married life….

Now all we have to worry about is claiming our child tax credits and the interest on our mortgage payments….

Thankfully, my sister (yea, Sarah!) did our taxes for us (I love having an accountant type person living with us!) and we are expecting a massive refund, which is mostly going into savings.

    Hope ya’ll are well!

Hey, do you want to come and visit us this summer?

We are luckier in Malaysia(if you can call anything to do with taxes that)

The IRS is a Federal Dept, so living in 5 states or working in different states does not make any difference.

IRS is federal here too. But we have to file locally for each state we worked in too. Ugh.

I feel your pain. This is the first year since HS (~10 yrs) that I could only file for one state. The one flaw of the DC Metro area is you are very likely to end up crossing state lines.

This years taxes are about 90% complete.
