Our Fun and Frugal Valentine’s Day Plans

February 13th, 2008 · 24 Comments

This is our first Valentine’s day as a married couple. And in the 6 Valentine’s Days we’ve been a couple, this is the first one we’ll actually get to spend together.

The first year we were together (I was a senior in highschool) I had to work on Valentine’s Day night. I was sad, because I had a boyfriend and I wasn’t getting to do anything special. He was working during the day, but he came by my library that evening. He brought a chocolate bar and poems. Best way ever to win me over!

The last 4 years, we were always at our separate colleges on V-Day. It was just never convenient to do anything. New semester, everything’s busy, etc.

As you can see, no expectations built up here. So we were chatting about what we might do and I came up with some ideas he really liked.

First, we’re going to dress up. I have a lovely bridesmaid dress from this last summer. I’ve only worn it once. Since it cost me a bundle, I might as well get more use out of it. It’s quite appropriately red. And Micah has two nice suits he uses for professoring. He’ll wear one of those.

But second, we’re going to stay in.

Actually, we’re going to do something which my sister might find very familiar. We’re ordering pizza and drinking Ginger Ale out of some goblets we were given and pretending it’s champagne (we’re teetotalers for various reasons including drug interaction). And it will be fun.

Then, if I can find something good at the library, we’ll watch a fun movie.

I got the idea from what my sister and I used to do when we got too old for baby sitters. Mom and Dad always went out on V-Day, which was their 1/2 anniversary too. Once we were old enough, she and I stayed home. We had money for pizza, we had soda, and we’d dress up and pretend we were upper class British ladies from around 1900. I have lots of good memories of trying to top each other’s outrageous stories. Then we’d watch a movie we’d rented.

Micah likes pizza, he likes to see me prettified, and he likes being silly. So he’s game!

I think this could very well be the best Valentine’s Day yet. Total cost: under $20.

Here’s the dress I’m going to wear. C’est tres jolie, n’est-ce pas?

    Belle!

That sounds great. We are going out to dinner as a family and doing a movie. The best part of the day is to think of your special one first!

Hey, look, it’s your face, on the interweb. Lovely dress.

Also: ha ha ha, “soda”. What a silly name for pop.

I’m all for the dressing up part and staying in. Sounds like a lot of fun, MrsM!

    How romantic! So excellent.

Hey, another nonalcoholic champagne-like drink is Martinelli’s. It’s carbonated apple juice…surprisingly tasty, and the bottle LOOKS like a champagne bottle. If apple juice seems a bit sweet, they also make a version with cranberry juice, which is a little more tart.

    Happy Valentine’s Day!

Hi Mrs M - that sounds like a fun idea. We don’t waste money on Valentines Day either - it’s such a rip off. I will be making Stuart a card using photoshop.

Yes the dress is beautiful. I thought you didn’t drink alcohol because you couldn’t manage to even taste/smell beer without spilling it ;)

    Cute picture!

I hope you and Micah have fun. *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*

Sounds fun! Great way to reuse one of those expensive bridesmaid dresses.
My husband and I are teetotalers as well. We love Welch’s sparkling grape juice in “wine” bottles. A bit expensive at about $2.50 a bottle, but it’s fun!
We’re staying in tonight, too. So much fun being a newly-wed ;)

    What a sweet idea!

    I don’t know french, but ooh-la-la (whistles)

and I call carbonated beverages “soda”

Have fun! Me and Mrs. Rocket will be enjoying our 7th “married” v-day.

That sounds a lot like what we’re doing — looking nice for each other but staying in, getting to-go food, and watching the new LOST episode. When you’re young and poor, all that really counts is spending good time together. The diamonds can come later ;)

    C’est tres jolie, n’est-ce pas?

Oui la robe est très jolie !

Here in the south it’s not soda or pop, it’s all called “Coke” :-)

  • 17 Lily // Feb 14, 2008 at 5:12 pm

Je conviens, la robe est très jolie. Et toi, tu es jolie aussi! :)

I can’t think of a good way to apply “chouette,” but throw that in there too.

Yay! I have great memories of our nights in. That was a great way to enjoy V-Day with no guys.

Except for when I got sick due to the Pringles. That sucked.

Great idea! You reminded me of something. We frequently go out a day before or after V-day because the restaurants are impossible on that day. We went out last night and I remember thing the poor waiters and waitresses will be working tonight (probably all of them given the crush) and won’t be able to go out themselves (like you at the library). Enjoy yourselves.

Sounds absolutely wonderful and fun!!! I hope you and Micah enjoy your date, along with elegant and sophisticated British accents! :)

  • 21 Aryn // Feb 14, 2008 at 8:48 pm

We’re staying in, too! I got him a card, and I might dig our wedding crystal out of the closet in honor of the occasion. Mostly I’m just looking forward to the steak I’m making!

Great pic and great idea! H and I are eating chicken noodle soup and chocolates ;)

  • 23 Mrs. Nathan // Feb 15, 2008 at 10:56 am

We stayed in also and fixed our “lobstergram” filet mignons, watched All Creatures Great and Small and read Prince Caspian. Very fun. I hope the fancy pizza date was a success!

    OMG is that you!?? COOLNESS!

MM’s note: Now you’re just being silly, SVB.
