This one’s particularly for bloggers who are trying to figure out how to put together their Archives page.
I’d had my Archives widget up, of course, but I saw some really nice archives pages and asked around. I thought it might require a lot of coding or something that would take a lot of time and effort. Nope. Several blog friends directed me to this “clean archives” plugin. I don’t know if it works with anything but self-hosted Wordpress blogs. But a fair number of you have those.
Setting it up works like a standard plugin. You just upload it with the FTP and activate it on your plugins page.
Then you go to Write –> Write Page and title it “Archives” or whatever you want to call it. Then go into the Code version of your writer (if you put it in the “Visual” editor, it’ll show up like it’s showing up on this post…just text) and insert this:

Voila. It’s that easy. Just publish the page and it’s done.
The plugin has a readme.txt document which explains other things you can do with the plugin (like making a version for your sidebar).

I might have to look into this. I’ve been ok with the archives in the sidebar, but this could free up some space for other items I’d like.

I have a strange problem. I use WP and wanted a /archives page, but that subdirectory always gave me a 404. When I named the archives page something else it worked fine. I use the default WP archives template. Have you had that problem?

How many months of content do you think it’s reasonable to have before starting the archive?

I’d say you might as well start right away. Because that way the need won’t sneak up on you.
Plus this one has titles and such, which means that after the first few posts it could be helpful for someone who doesn’t want to page through your site.
