Frugal Tip for Cleaning Smelly Stockings

January 31st, 2008 · frugality & generics · 15 Comments

I don’t know about you, but when I wear stockings they tend to smell pretty bad. It’s embarrassing. I’ve tried handwashing and machine washing (in a delicates bag) but after a while neither completely removes the smell.

Lynnae’s post on frugal cleaning inspired me to try something different. I put the stockings in a basin with enough water to cover them and about a table-spoon of baking soda. I let them soak there for two hours.

Then I took them out, washed them, and you can’t smell a thing. Nothing. They’re amazingly clean!!

Next goal–deodorize my shoes. I’m thinking some baking soda….

That’s a great tip! I totally know what you mean about hose. Now if I could just keep them from running…

I told you! Baking soda, vinegar, and Dawn, and you can clean anything! :)

I’m glad it worked for you. I’ll have to try that myself!

Baking soda will totally work in your shoes, I use it every summer when I wear canvas shoes and no socks (can’t wear open toe shoes to work) I buy large packages of baking soda and sprinkle it on my carpet about 30mins before I am going to vacuum, I just sprinkle some in my shoes at the same time.

I have feet that refuse to stop perspiring, so I know how embarrassing it is. Another simple solution is to rub some talcum power/ baby power into your feet before you wear your socks. Of course, this doesn’t look good when you wear black socks :P

I think it’s really cool that being frugal is also being green. I have 2 gallons of vinegar at my house, one in the kitchen and the other belongs in the laundry room.

I left my shoes full of baking soda for days with no luck :(

I’ve heard that stuffing your shoes with old newspapers for a day or so helps (haven’t tried it myself).

The baking soda soak also works extremely well for teen-aged (and older) boys socks.
Putting your shoes out in the sun, opening them as wide as possible, can also help dispel odors.

For sandals in the summer, I fill them with rolled newspaper and leave them outside in the sun for an afternoon. It deoderizes really well.

I did the non-frugal option for shoes and bought some of the Gold Bond shoe powder. It reduces perspiration and controls the smell.

With shoes it is all about keeping them dry. Wet, dark and damp=the bacteria that smell. Rotate your shoes and they will last 4x as long.

This is why boys shoes in High school stink and girl don’t tend to!

This is AMAZING. I am totally doing this. I am currently rocking only two (!) pairs or stockings on an everyday basis, so I need to wash them often. I tend to just hand-wash my stockings in the sink with lukewarm water and some dish soap (’cause I’m awesome like that…?), but this is way better.
