Today I realized once again the power of networking. As I’ve mentioned before, I got the hospital job through a good friend. And Thursday, at my secretary job, I had a chance to make a new networking contact.

At this company, I’ve met a lot of vendors. We had a tasting conducted by a woman who works at a local catering company and will be planning our Christmas party. (It was sooo yummy!)

I got to chatting with her about how she got into this business and whatnot. Turns out she’s a very financially aware woman who realized years ago that her full time job was just paying for childcare. So she came home and stayed until her youngest went to school.

But while home, she started working a few times a month with this catering company. First she was a server, then she began to manage servers, and now she plans them. She switched to full time when she started planning and her son went off to school.

As she left, she gave us all business cards. I sometimes throw these away, but I held onto hers. I suddenly realized–here was a person I could network with. It came up in the conversation that I was leaving this week, so it might not surprise her much if I e-mailed her sometime and asked about serving at some of her events, maybe as a part-time job (one or two days a week). Etc.

I’ve done it before–some brides like to hire college students. As long as you tell me what to do, I can do it.

Anyway, I’m saving her card. In fact, I got an extra copy just in case. (This is a also step towards achieving my goal of $2000/mo by April 2008!)
