I am now a newborn hearing screener! Well, I was hired anyway. We’re working out logistics for my training and leaving my current position. I’ve decided to move up my announcement date at work by a week and am working on a proposal for my bosses tomorrow.
Basically, I propose to work through the end of the month, because they’ll need someone to cover the office for a whole week and I’d be much better than an inexperienced person. But I do ask for a couple mornings off each week if possible. Barring that, at least the time to do some HR things like drug testing which I didn’t get to do today.
Um, about that free lunch. I had a chance to volunteer with the Special Olympics fall games today. Very much fun. Very much cold. I helped out with tennis, keeping score. It was really exciting, lots of fun to encourage the kids as they competed. It was a great atmosphere and the whole thing was well run.
Anyway, after a morning of set-up, an impromptu game of tennis with a guy from the White House who looks like Nick Stokes (CSI), opening ceremonies, freezing my butt off for two hours scoring people, and take-down, the lunch they provided was the best meal I’ve had in a long time. Seriously. I didn’t know turkey sandwiches could taste so good.
Then I went, exhaustedly, to the interview and perked up enough to get hired. I should say a lot of it’s because I have a good friend who works in that department already. They love her and she highly recommended me, which apparently bumped me to the top of my list. And then the interview went well.
I’m really excited about the job, I don’t quite know how to express it….it’s hard to describe. The simple version is: I get to work with babies!!!!
The more complicated one has something to do with making sure that kids have the best chance possible and that any hearing problems are caught right away and can possibly be corrected–but something more, too.
Lessons for the day: Network. And volunteer. And hunger is the best sauce.

Congratulations! I have overseen a teen parent program since 1993 and the best part of the program is working with babies. There is something so magical about their presence - enjoy!

SD, ironically it was a last minute call from my current boss because our company didn’t have enough people participating. After I committed, I got the e-mail about the interview, it was perfect.
My college used to do the Special Olympics too, so I’d done it before. But the fall games are smaller and were better organized (here).
