Mr. Micah and I had some very financially fortuitous things happen recently. Well, “very” as in, on the small scale they’re quite helpful and will save us money this month.

The biggest and best was probably getting taken out to dinner last night by my parents. It was very nice to see them again. It was also nice that my dad paid for it, so we didn’t have to worry about stretching the budget (though neither of us ordered very expensive dinners).

Like most restaurants, they gave us twice as much as we could/should eat. So we boxed half. Not only does that cover another dinner, but we’re going to switch meals so we get some variety too.

Because Mom and Dad live a couple hours away, Mom didn’t think it’d be a good idea to take her leftover steak home. So she gave it to us! I’m going to cut it up and put it in a stir-fry I’m making.

Then Dad gave us his leftover chocolate cake for health reasons (he’d put aside 1/2 beforehand).

Our week’s meal budget is looking pretty happy right now!

Then my lovely sister and aunt decided to give me gift cards to Joann Fabrics for my birthday last month. Joann was having a Columbus day sale this weekend, so we went and got backing for the bed quilt. (The batting was a gift from Bobbie, my boss, because she had some leftover in the back room at work, so that was free too!) With a 50% off coupon, $25 turned into $12.50. And then it was free with the giftcard.

Another aunt gave me a giftcard to Target where I bought a lovely twinset which will really expand my wardrobe (it can be worn in so many ways!). I may have mentioned that already, but I’m still feeling grateful for great birthday present.

Having a budget and being aware of my finances makes me particularly grateful for such things. I like that, I like being more aware of the generosity of even small gifts (like half a slice of chocolate cake).
